Chapter Seventeen

Ryan

I threw the phone into the passenger seat and growled, squeezing the steering wheel until it creaked in my hands. Tally passed out at my uncle's house. Mom didn't know why for sure, but she suspected the bond was to blame.

There was something else she wasn't telling me, but she was holding it close. Images of Tally hurt flashed across my vision and my foot pressed the accelerator. I passed the person in front of me and kept going, racing to get to her. Something was wrong and I needed to know what.

Maybe breaking the bond really was going to kill her . . .

Could I live with that? Was it better for her to die than be with an abusive mate? I scrubbed my hand down my face, focusing on the highway in front of me. I wasn't far away now, maybe an hour. I didn't have an answer for that question. Only Tally could answer that for herself and I couldn't blame her either way.

Death was scary, even to me, and I'd seen plenty of it. There was something about the finality of it that always gave me pause. The shit I'd had to do to stay alive . . . I didn't regret it. Staying alive was more important than any moral qualms. But their eyes, the looks in their eyes as death came was something that haunted me. There was a light that dimmed when someone died and you could always see it in the eyes. That was their soul leaving their body, at least that's what I liked to think.

Maybe there were no souls.

Maybe we were all just surviving until nothingness caught up with us.
